PM Mitsotakis visits Vyronas, expresses support for candidate governor Nikos Hardalias

English

Prime Minister and New Democracy President Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Monday visited the Athens district of Vyronas with the New Democracy-backed candidate for Attica governor, Nikos Hardalias, praising the former deputy minister's deep knowledge and extensive experience of civil protection issues and expressing unequivocal support for his gubernatorial bid.
"These are the sort of people we need...in order to be able to implement our own vision," the prime minister said, explaining the party's decision to "put a strong political slant on the elections for the 13 regions of the country."
"We did this not because we wish to once again paint the map blue - we painted it blue twice in the elections in May and June and there is now no doubt as to which is the dominant political force. We did this, however, because we want to support individuals who share our views on the country's growth potential and can implement, in tandem with central government, crucial political choices," Mitsotakis said.
He stressed that Hardalias had proven himself as a mayor, as a deputy minister and then as deputy defence minister, given the need to cooperate much more effectively with the armed forces in civil protection matters.
The prime minister emphasised that the Attica region will receive significant funding from the European Union in the next five years, which must be used on infrastructure and play an important developmental role.
He urged voters to give Hardalias the opportunity to implement his vision and also allow the government to work with regional governors "with whom it speaks the same language". Mitsotakis said that the goal was for the Attica gubernatorial election to be concluded in the first round of the local elections, with a clear victory for Hardalias.
Hardalias, on his part, pledged to "fight the good fight" and promised that, if elected, together with his team he will do "everything humanly possible in the 66 neighbourhoods of [Attica] in order to bring results."
